What was my role?
I did compositing on Illusorium Studios' fan-art piece based on the noir comic series Blacksad.
Technical breakdown: triplanar STMaps in comp
The most interesting part of this project was a tool I built to apply 2D textures directly in comp. Using Position and Normal passes from the render, the tool generates triplanar STMaps (projections along X, Y and Z) so that any 2D texture can be mapped onto the CG assets from within Nuke — and it tracks the assets correctly through the shot as the camera and objects move.
This meant look tweaks — adding grain, wear, printed patterns — could happen in comp without a round trip to texturing and re-rendering, which is exactly the kind of iteration speed comp is for.
Software
Nuke, working with multichannel EXR renders (Position, Normals, and beauty AOVs).
